Homemade Pita Chips RecipePosted: February 4, 2011
This pita chip recipe is as easy as it gets as far as bread-making is concerned. These pita chips are perfect for dipping in homemade hummus or any other variety of dip – they are also tasty on their own. If you want pitas that you can stuff with lots of goodies, just stop after the first baking, but if you want some delicious and crispy pita chips, just follow this recipe in its entirety.
1 packet of Active Dry Yeast (2 tsp. if you are using bulk yeast)
1 tbsp. Sugar
1 1/4 cups of Warm Water (110 – 120 degrees Fahrenheit)
3 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 ) Add the yeast and the water into a medium size mixing bowl.
2 ) Add the sugar and let stand for 10 minutes.
3 ) Add the salt and begin slowly adding 2 1/2 cups of flour, mixing with a wooden spoon.
4 ) Continue to add the remaining flour until the dough does not stick to the sides of the bowl.
5 ) Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until dough is springy and no longer sticky.
6 ) Oil a large bowl and then place dough in bowl and turn over to coat in oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm area for 1 1/2 – 2 hours (the dough should double in size).
7 ) Knead the dough for a minute or so and then divide the ball into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball about 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
8 ) Once balls are made, put them on a floured surface and cover with a damp cloth. Let rest for 20 minutes.
9 ) Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Cut 12 pieces of 8″ x 8″ tin foil.
10 ) Roll each ball out with a rolling pin until they are approximately 1/4 inch thick and 7 inches in diameter. *They do not have to be perfect for the pita chip recipe.
11 ) Place the rolled out dough onto a piece of tin foil and bake in the oven for 8-10 minutes. *I recommend cooking just two pitas at a time.
12 ) Slice the baked pitas into 1″ x 1″ strips and separate each strip into two pieces. Lower the oven to 375 degrees.
13 ) Place the strips (inside of pita should be side up) on a baking sheet. Brush each strip with olive oil and sprinkle sea salt onto each piece. *You can also add other seasonings at this point. Garlic salt, oregano, and parsley are some of my favorites.
14 ) Bake for an additional 5-10 minutes until they are golden brown. Serve immediately.
Enjoy these pita chips with my homemade hummus recipe for a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
*Please note that these do not store very well, therefore you should eat them the day you bake them.
